History & Origins

The Patel community, also widely known as Patidar, is one of India's most prominent communities, originating from Gujarat. The title "Patel" historically denoted the village headman or chief revenue collector (Patlikh holder) during the Mughal and British periods, and it became a hereditary surname for families who held these positions. The community is predominantly agricultural in origin, with Patidars being recognized as some of Gujarat's most successful and industrious farmers, particularly in tobacco, cotton, and dairy cultivation.

The Patel community has achieved remarkable success in entrepreneurship, industry, and professional fields. The community is known globally for its diaspora, with Patel families establishing businesses and professional careers across the United States, United Kingdom, East Africa, Canada, Australia, and other countries. In the US, Patels are notably prominent in the hospitality industry and in medicine and engineering. Within India, the community has produced leading industrialists, politicians, scientists, and professionals. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister who unified the nation's princely states, remains the community's most celebrated figure.

Geographic Distribution

Gujarat is the homeland of the Patel community, with major concentrations in the Charotar region (Anand, Kheda, Nadiad — considered the heartland), Saurashtra, Kutch, and North Gujarat. Within Gujarat, Charotar Patidars, Leuva Patidars, and Kadva Patidars are the major regional groups. Significant populations also exist in Maharashtra (Mumbai, Pune), Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Karnataka. The Patel global diaspora is substantial — the US, UK, Canada, East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania), and Australia have large Patel communities. The community's international network is a distinctive feature.

Marriage Traditions & Customs

Patel weddings follow Gujarati Hindu traditions, which are known for their colourful and elaborate celebrations. The wedding typically includes Gol Dhana (engagement), Pithi (turmeric ceremony), Mehndi, Garba/Raas (traditional dance celebrations), Jaan (groom's procession), Hastamilap (joining of hands), Mangal Pheras (circumambulation of the sacred fire), and Kanyadaan. The Mameru ceremony (maternal uncle's gifts) and Vidai are also important. Patel weddings are often large community occasions with extensive feasting. Matchmaking considers family background, sub-community (Leuva/Kadva/Charotar), educational and professional accomplishments, and increasingly, global compatibility for diaspora families. Horoscope matching is practiced by many families.

Notable Sub-Communities

The Patel/Patidar community has well-defined sub-groups:

• Leuva Patidar: From Saurashtra and South Gujarat, one of the two major divisions
• Kadva Patidar: From North Gujarat and Kutch, the other major division
• Charotar Patidar: From the Charotar region of central Gujarat, known for agricultural prosperity and significant diaspora
• Anjana Patel: Found in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan
• Patel (Koli Patel, Ghanchi Patel): Related but distinct communities that also use the Patel surname

Marriage preferences often align along these sub-community lines, particularly between Leuva and Kadva, though inter-group marriages are increasingly common.

Gotras

While the gotra system is not as central to Patel matchmaking as in some other communities, many families do maintain awareness of their kul (clan) and atak (surname/lineage). The community is organized by atak (such as Amin, Desai, Naik, and others) and village of origin, both of which can influence marriage preferences. Some families also observe gotra-based practices. The primary matchmaking factors in the Patel community are sub-community alignment, family reputation, educational achievement, and professional standing.

Dietary Traditions

The Patel community in Gujarat is predominantly vegetarian, in keeping with the broader Gujarati cultural tradition. The community has a rich culinary heritage featuring Gujarati thali staples: Undhiyu, Dal Dhokli, Khichdi-Kadhi, Thepla, Fafda-Jalebi, and a wide variety of farsan (snacks) and mithai (sweets). Chaas (buttermilk) and dairy products are central, reflecting the community's dairy farming heritage. Some families, particularly those settled outside Gujarat or in the diaspora, may have adapted their dietary practices. Vegetarianism is a common expectation in Patel matchmaking and is typically discussed early in the process.
