The Prajapati community is a prominent artisan community with a distinguished heritage in pottery, clay craftsmanship, and ceramic arts. Also widely known as Kumhar (potter), the community derives its name from "Prajapati," the Vedic creator deity, reflecting the community's identity as creators and shapers. The art of pottery is among the oldest human crafts, and Prajapati families have preserved and advanced this tradition across millennia — from the Indus Valley Civilization's famous pottery to the diverse ceramic traditions found across India today.

The community's contributions extend far beyond traditional pottery. Prajapati artisans created the earthenware vessels, terracotta art, clay tiles, and ceramic products that have been essential to Indian daily life, architecture, and art. In modern times, the community has diversified into education, business, engineering, and public service while many families continue the ceramic and pottery tradition with contemporary innovations. Community organizations across states have been active in promoting education, economic advancement, and social welfare. The Prajapati/Kumhar community is recognized as an OBC (Other Backward Class) in most Indian states.

Geographic Distribution

The Prajapati community is found across India, with major concentrations in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar. In Gujarat, the community is concentrated in Saurashtra, Kutch, and central Gujarat. Rajasthan has significant populations in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and across the state, where the community's blue pottery and terracotta traditions are famous. Uttar Pradesh (particularly Khurja, known for ceramics), Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh also have large Prajapati populations. Marriage Traditions & Customs

Prajapati weddings follow Hindu marriage traditions with community-specific customs. The ceremony typically includes Tilak (engagement), Haldi, Mehndi, Barat, Jaimala, Pheras around the sacred fire, Kanyadaan, and Vidai. In Gujarat, the Lagan (wedding) includes Pithi (turmeric ceremony), Mandap Muhurat, and Jaan (groom's procession). Community feasting and celebration are central to the occasion.
