History & Origins

The Teli community is a historically significant OBC (Other Backward Class) community with deep roots in the oil-pressing trade and allied agricultural businesses. The name "Teli" derives from "tel" (oil), reflecting the community's traditional expertise in extracting oils from sesame, mustard, groundnut, coconut, and other oilseeds using the traditional "kolhu" (oil press). This occupation was essential to the Indian economy for centuries, as oil was indispensable for cooking, lighting, medicine, and religious rituals.

The Teli community has a long history of entrepreneurship and commercial acumen. Beyond oil pressing, community members diversified into trading, agriculture, and other businesses over generations. In modern India, the community has achieved notable progress in education, politics, business, and public service. Prominent political and social leaders have emerged from the Teli community across multiple states. Community organizations have been active in promoting education and social advancement. The community is classified as OBC in most Indian states, reflecting its historical socio-economic position.

Geographic Distribution

The Teli community is widely distributed across central, western, and southern India. Maharashtra has a large Teli population, particularly in Vidarbha, Marathwada, and western Maharashtra. Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have significant populations across both urban and rural areas. Uttar Pradesh (particularly eastern UP), Bihar, Rajasthan, and Gujarat also have notable Teli populations. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the community is known as Ganekapu or Gandla. Marriage Traditions & Customs

Teli weddings follow Hindu marriage traditions with regional and community-specific customs. In Maharashtra, the wedding includes Sakhar Puda (engagement), Haldi, Mehndi, the Mangalashtak ceremony, and Saptapadi (seven steps).
